Strange things in Roswell, NM...

There is something very strange about this place.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think we are being watched...

Hmmm, this place might be okay...

Time for a break...

We made it through our first day and now it's time for some well deserved rest...we even adopted a Carlsbad bat...(they wouldn't let us take pictures of the bats flying out of the cave so you'll have to take our word for how cool it was!

Even more Carlsbad pictures...

Hmmm, scary old stairs or scary old ladder...

More pictures of us exploring the cavern...

Camera Difficulties...

Ok, it is kind of difficult to get good pictures while in a dark cave...after fiddling with the camera settings I started to at least see something instead of a black screen.

I got the camera shutter to slow down and set the exposure up...but I had the color set for inside and the flash is really closer to sun light so everything started to look blue.

Finally the perfect camera settings...the only problem was without a tripod I had to be perfectly still or everything would be blurry.

Dad and son exploring...

How much further?

The trail to main part of the cave is about 1 1/2 miles and pretty steep terrain.

Don't touch that!

The #1 rule of the cavern is don't touch anything...your oils and bacteria on your hands can stop the chemical reactions that form all of the cave formations.

Into the mouth of a giant...

Wow, it's really dark in here.

We made it!

As you can see I sort of figured out where we are going...We made it to Carlsbad Caverns after 9 hours on the road from Dallas. Here we are at the cavern entrance.

What about the dog?

No our dog has not started parachute training...we made the mistake of taking her on our last roadtrip (14 hours to Colorado) and she went crazy, pacing back and forth in the car the entire trip. So now we have a doggy straight jacket to secure her in place...but she is stil too much for another trip.

I've got it...let's go on a roadtrip!

Jake is passed out on the couch since I turned his room into the roadtrip command center.

It's 2 am the day of the trip and I have no idea where we are going.
